How To Get Help

Contact an American Job Center and say you are interested in WIOA.

You will attend a WIOA orientation and eligibility meeting. Adults must have low incomes and lack job skills in demand now; or be a “dislocated worker” – you are laid off or have a layoff notice because of current economic situation (not leaving a job for personal reasons) and you need skills currently in demand.

WIOA Frequently Asked Questions

CAN YOU GIVE ME AN OVERVIEW OF THE WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIOA) PROGRAM?
Workforce Investment Act scholarships are available to adults and dislocated workers who meet income and other guidelines, and who need training to be competitive in today’s workplace. Connecticut’s Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL) lists available trainings, including classroom, correspondence, internet, broadcast and other apprenticeship programs.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR WIOA FUNDING?
Prospective clients/students should first contact their nearest American Job Center, located in Stamford at 141 Franklin Street, 2nd Floor, Stamford, CT 06901, (203) 353-1702.

There are many criteria used in deciding who qualifies for help, speak with a representative from the American Job Center.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I HAVE COMPLETED MY RESEARCH?
Speak with your WIOA counselor who will advise you on how you should proceed.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I HAVE CHOSEN A SCHOOL AND A PROGRAM TO PARTICIPATE IN?
Reach out to the WIOA representative and express your interest in the school you wish to attend, along with your reasons for choosing it. By doing so, you will be well on your way to obtaining approval!

WHAT DO I DO ONCE I HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY WIOA TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM AND HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED BY NORTHEAST MEDICAL INSTITUTE LLC?

WHAT DO I DO IF I CANNOT START THE PROGRAM?
You should notify the school program administrator and your WIOA counselor immediately and explain why you are unable to start class.


 

Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board FAQs

 

Do I need to live in the 41 towns and cities of the Waterbury/Torrington/Danbury region to receive services from the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board ?

Yes. You must be a resident of one of the following towns:

Barkhamsted, Bethlehem, Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Canaan, Cheshire, Colebrook, Cornwall, Danbury, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Middlebury, Morris, Newtown, New Fairfield, New Milford, New Hartford, Naugatuck,  Norfolk, North Canaan, Prospect, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Salisbury, Sharon, Sherman, Southbury, Thomaston, Torrington, Warren, Washington, Waterbury, Watertown, Winchester (Winsted), Wolcott, and Woodbury.

Are the training and educational programs free of charge? If not, will I have to pay anything back if/when I am hired on a job?

Yes, the programs are free of charge to you, but there is a maximum tuition cost subsidy? of $4,000*. No, you will not have to pay back any of that amount.  However, if the tuition is over $4,000* you will be responsible for the difference in cost.

*certain trainings have been approved for a higher maximum cost due to industry demand. This can be further discussed with a career navigator once one is assigned to you.

Do I need to be unemployed to access NRWIB employment and training services?

No. You can be what is considered underemployed which is defined as a person not having enough paid work or not doing work that makes full use of their skills and abilities, or out-of-work defined as an unemployed individual.

What is the minimum and maximum age requirements for someone to be eligible for any NRWIB training/educational program?

This varies by program. Here is a list of programs and their age requirements:

  • Youth Programs (minimum age 14)
  • Most other program require a minimum age of 18 to qualify
